Nepal is officially known to be the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. It is a landlocked country which is located in South Asia. Nepal covers an area of 147,181 square kilometers and has a population of 27 million, approximately. Nepal is known to be the world's 93rd largest country in terms of land mass along with being the 41st most populous country. It is located in the Himalayas and shares its borders on the north by China and by India on the south, east, and west. The country is separated from Bangladesh through the narrow Indian Siliguri Corridor. Sikkim in India separates it from Bhutan. The capital of the country is Kathmandu and it is the largest metropolis. Eight of the ten tallest mountains in the world are located on the mountainous north of Nepal, which also includes the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest. 81.3 percent of the Nepalis practice Hinduism. Large portions of the population that are located especially in the hill region often identify themselves as both Hindu and Buddhist. Nepal was ruled by the Shah dynasty of kings from 1768, A Civil War that lasted for almost a decade led to the 12-point agreement in the year 2005. The ensuing elections for the 1st Nepalese Constituent Assembly in 2008 favored the establishment of a federal multiparty representative democratic republic along with the abolition of the monarchy. Nepal is a developing country and has a low income economy. It was ranked 145th of 187 countries on the Human Development Index as of 2014 and till date continues to struggle with high levels of poverty as well as hunger. The GDP of this country as of 2012 was at over $17.921 billion. In 2010, agriculture accounted for 36.1%, industry for 15.4% and services comprise 48.5% of GDP. Agriculture, solely employs 76% of the workforce whereas services 18% and manufacturing or craft-based industry 6%. Political uncertainty has hindered the economic growth of this country to a great extent. However, the real GDP growth is estimated to increase to almost 5 percent for the years 2011/2012. Sources of growth mainly include agriculture, financial, construction and other services. Exotic culture and breathtaking scenic beauties of Nepal make it a hot spot for the tourists but sadly the political instability and the lack of good infrastructure has somehow stunted the growth in the tourism industry as well. However, even then the tourism sector contributed nearly 3% of national GDP in the year 2012.
