Mauritius is officially known as the Republic of Mauritius. It is an island nation which is located in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometers off the southeast coast of the African continent. The country comprises of the island of Mauritius and Agalega along with Rodrigues which is 560 kilometers on the east, and the archipelago of Saint Brandon. The islands of Mauritius, Reunion and Rodrigues, together form part of the Mascarene Islands. The total area covered by the country is 2,040 square kilometers. Port Louis is both the largest city as well as the capital of Mauritius. During the medieval periods, the island of Mauritius was visited first by the Arabs and then the Portuguese and the islands were uninhabited till the Dutch Republic established a colony there in the year 1638. The Dutch colony was abandoned in 1710, and after five years, the island became a French colony. Due to the strategic position of this country, Mauritius was also known as the "star and key" of the Indian Ocean.Under the British rule, the island's name was reverted to Mauritius and it became an independent state in the year 1968 after the adoption of a new constitution and in 1992, also became a republic within the Commonwealth. The people of this country are multicultural as well as multiethnic. The government of this island is modeled closely on the Westminster parliamentary system. Mauritius is highly ranked for its economic as well as political freedom along with its democracy. Since its independence, Mauritius has developed from an economy that was based solely on agriculture and was considered a low-income to a middle-income diversified economy. The economy is based on textiles, tourism, financial services and sugar. Recently, seafood, information and communication technology, hospitality and property development, renewable energy along with energy, healthcare, training and education and training have emerged as important sectors which have resulted into attracting substantial investment from foreign as well as local and foreign investors. This country has no exploitable natural resources and relies heavily on imported petroleum products so that it can meet most of its energy requirements. Some of the renewable and local and renewable energy sources include hydro, biomass, solar and wind energy. Mauritius is known to have one of the largest exclusive economic zones in the world and in the year 2012 the government announced its intention to develop the Ocean Economy. This country is also ranked quite high in terms of good governance, free economy and a friendly investment climate.
