Martinique is an island located in the Lesser Antilles which is situated in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It covers a total land area of 1,128 square kilometers and a population of 386,486 as of 2013. Martinique is an overseas region of France and comprises of a single overseas department. Being one of the Windward Islandsthe country is located north of Saint Lucia, south of Dominica and northwest of Barbados. This country is known to be one of the twenty seven regions of France along with being an integral part of the French Republic as well. It is also a part of the European Union and its currency is Euro. Official language of Martinique is also French.The total area covered by Martinique is 1,100 square kilometers out of which 40 square kilometers is comprised of water and the rest, land. Martinique is considered to be the 3rd largest island in The Lesser Antilles and stretches up to 70 km in length and 30 km in width. In the year 2003, the country had a total GDP of 5.496 billion euros. Its per capita GDP was 14,283 euros as of 2000, services constituted 82.2% of GDP and industry comprised of 8.6% along with agriculture at 3.5%. In 2002, Martinique exported 26 million euros-worth of goods that primarily comprised of fruit, refined petroleum and beverages and imported 486 million euros-worth of goods which includes furniture, vehicles, medicine and raw petroleum. Historically, Martinique's economy depended mainly on agriculture but by the beginning of the 21st century the agricultural sector started dwindling considerably. Sugar production declined and banana exports were increasing and were going mostly to France. The bulk of meat, grain, vegetable requirements must be imported which contributed to a chronic trade deficit that required ahuge annual transfers of aid from France. Tourism, however of this country became more essential and important than the agricultural exports. Tourism also became a major source of foreign exchange and it is believed that in the year 2000, almost 500,000 tourists visited this island. Tourism industry solely employed 7% of the total workforce in Martinique along with 16% of the total businesses on the island approximately which includes some 6,000 companies that provided tourist-related services. All the goods and commodities that entered the island were charged with a variable "sea toll" which might even reach 30% of the value of the cargo and can provide 40% of the island's total revenue.
