Mali is a landlocked country which is situated in West Africa and is considered to be the eighth largest country in Africa. Mali covers a total area of over 1,240,000 square kilometers. The population of this country is 14.5 million and the capital of Mali is known as Bamako. Mali comprises of eight regions and the borders on the north of this country extends deep into the middle of the Sahara Desert and the southern part of the country features Senegal and Niger rivers where most of the inhabits live. The economic structure of Mali mainly relies upon fishing and agriculture. The prominent natural resources of this country include salt and gold. In the entire African continent, Mali is considered to be the third largest producer of gold. Sadly, about half the total population lives below the international poverty line and a majority of the people are non-denominational Muslims. Mali was a part of three West African empires once that was responsible for controlling the trans-Saharan trade which was known to be Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire, after which Mali was names an finally the Songhai Empire. Mathematics, literature, arts and astronomy flourished in the golden age of the country. In 1300, the Mali Empire solely covered twice the size of today’s France and its borders stretched to the West coast of Africa. France seized control of Mali and made it a part of French Sudan in the late 19th century. French Sudan got its independence in 1960 as the Mali Federation. The Central Bank of West African States is responsible for handling the financial affairs of Mali along with the additional members of the Economic Community of West African States. Mali is known to be one of the poorest countries in the world with an average worker's annual salary approximately equal to $1,500 US dollars. The country has undergone economic reforms and signed agreements with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank and during the years 1988 to 1996, the government of Mali largely reformed public enterprises. Since the agreement, 12 enterprises were partially privatized, sixteen enterprises were privatized and 20 liquidated. Between the years 1992 and 1995, the country implemented an economic adjustment program which further resulted in economic growth and a reduction in financial imbalances as well. The programalso increased economic as well as social conditions which ultimately led to Mali joining the World Trade Organization in the year 1995.
