Luxembourg is officially known as the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is a landlocked country located in Western Europe and bordered to its east by Germany, west and north by Belgium and France on the south. As of 2012, Luxembourg had a population of 524,853 and the total area the country covers is approximately 2,586 square kilometers which makes it one of the smallest European sovereign nations. The country has a representative democracy with a constitutional monarch and headed by a grand duke. It is a developed country and has an advanced economy with the world's highest GDP in terms of PPP per capita, as per the United Nations in 2014. The central location has always been an advantage as it has historically made it of great strategic importance to various powers. Luxembourg is a founding member of the NATO, European Union, OECD, Benelux and the United Nations which reflects the nation’s political consensus in favour of political, economic, and military integration. Thecapital, Luxembourg is not only the largest city of the country but it is also the seat of various agencies and institutions of the European Union. Due to its geographical position, the culture of this country is a blend of Romanic and Germanic European customs. Luxembourg is basically a trilingual country: French, Luxembourgish and German are the three official languages. Even though, it is a secular state, Luxembourg is predominantly Roman Catholic.The stable and high-income market economy of this country shows low inflation and moderate growth along with a high level of innovation. Unemployment is also quite low. However, due to the global financial crisis in 2008, the unemployment rate rose up to 6.1% by 2012. According to the IMF, in 2011, Luxembourg was considered to be the second richest country in the world, with a per capita GDP in terms of purchasing-power parity was recorded to be $80,119. Luxembourg ranks 13thin the Heritage Foundation's Index of Economic Freedom, 4th in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s quality of life and 26th in the United Nations Human Development Index. The industrial sector of Luxembourg was only dominated by steel till the 1960s, after which it gradually diversified to include rubber, chemicals and other products. During the past few decades, growth in the financial sector has compensated for the decline in the production of steel. Services like finance and banking account for the majority of economic output. Luxembourg is known to be the second largest investment fund center in the world along with being the most important private banking center in the Eurozone.
