Ireland is an island which is situated in the North Atlantic and is separated from Great Britain which lies to its east by the North Channel, St. George’s Channel and the Irish Sea. Ireland is known to be the third largest in Europe, the second-largest island of the British Isles along with being the twentieth-largest on the Earth. Ireland is divided politically into the Northern Ireland which is a part of the United Kingdom and is situated in the north east of the island along with Republic of Ireland which is officially names as Ireland and covers five-sixths of the island. As of the year 2011 the population of this country was estimated to be about 6.4 million which made it rank the second-most populous island in entire Europe. Over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland and fewer than 4.6 million people are believed to live in the Republic of Ireland. The geography of the island mainly consists of relatively low-lying mountains that surrounds a central plain and has lush vegetation. The temperature is also quite moderate. The prehistoric land of this country witnessed the arrival of humans after 8000 BC. England claimed sovereignty over Ireland after the Norman invasion in the 12th century. The English rule lasted up till 17th century Tudor conquest which ultimately led to colonization of the country by settlers from Britain. With the help of the Acts of Union in 1801, the country became a part of the United Kingdom. In the early 20th century, a war of independence was carried out which was followed by the partition of the island resulting in the creation of the Irish Free State. In the year 1973, both parts of Ireland decided to join the European Economic Community. The Irish culture has significant impact on other cultures especially in the fields of literature and somewhat in education and science as well. Great Britain shares various features of the culture with Ireland which included the English Language, sports like rugby, golf, football among many others. Ireland has two distinct currencies. One is the Euro and another Pound Sterling. However, despite having two jurisdictions, commercial activity in the country is carried out on an all island basis and at a rapid pace. The only area in which the country actively operates as a single market is electricity. Along with the electricity, the natural gas distribution network is also established on the entire island.
