Guinea is officially known as the Republic of Guinea and is located in West Africa. The country was formerly known as French Guinea and today it is sometimes called Guinea-Conakry so that I can be distinguished from its neighbouring countries, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. The population of Guinea is estimated to be approximately 10.5 million and covers a total area of 245,860 square kilometers. Guinea is a republic where the people directly elect the president. The president is the head of state as well as the head of government. The legislative body of the country is known as unicameral Guinean National Assembly and its members are directly elected by the people. It is predominantly an Islamic country where Muslims represent 85 percent of the total population. The people of this country belong to twenty-four ethnic groups. French is the official language of Guinea. It is also considered the main language for communication in government administrations, schools, in the media along with the country's security forces, but apart from that, more than twenty-four indigenous languages are also spoken. This country was named after the Guinea region. Guinea is a traditional name for the African region that lies along the Gulf of Guinea and stretches north ends at the Sahel. The economy of the country is dependent hugely on agriculture as well as mineral production. Being the world's second largest producer of bauxite, the country is known for its rich deposits of diamonds and gold. Human rights are quite controversial in this country as the United States Government has also stated that security forces torture people and abuse children along with sexually assaulting women. The humanitarian situation and GDP of the country in the coming years seem bleak too as the country is currently at the core of the Ebola outbreak. The country is known for its abundant natural resources which include 25 percent or more of the world's known bauxite reserves. It is also known for its diamonds, gold along with other metals. The country has great potential for hydroelectric power. The major exports of the country are namely alumina and Bauxite. There are other industries that contribute to the country’s economy as well such as processing plants for beer, juices, tobacco along with soft drinks. 80 percent of the labor force of the country is employed by the agriculture. When the country was under the French rule and at the beginning of independence, it was known as a major exporter of coffee, bananas, pineapples, peanuts and palm oil.
