Democratic Republic of Congo is also known as Congo and is situated in Central Africa. This Central African country shares its borders with quite a few countries such as South Sudan, Republic of Congo and Central African Republic on the north, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda to the east, Atlantic Ocean on its west, Angola and Zambia to the South. The population of The Democratic Republic of Congo is over 75 million and is considered second largest in terms of land area in Africa and eleventh largest in world. Based on its population, this country is known to be the fourth populous country in Africa and nineteenth populous country in world. The Congolese Civil War began in the year 1996 and involved nine African nations, twenty armed groups, multiple groups of UN peacekeepers. In the year 2013, Human Development Index ranks Congo 18 out of 187 countries and has a low level of human development. Due to political instability, lack of infrastructure, corruption limits development and extraction efforts. The country has rich reserve of natural resources. The largest export of Congo is the raw materials and China was believed to acquire 50 percent of the exports supplied by The Democratic Republic of Congo in the year 2012. The Central Bank of the Congo is the bank which is solely responsible for maintaining as well as developing Congolese Franc. The World Bank in the year 2007 decides to grant the country an aid of 1.3 billion. In terms of the natural resource reserve, Congo is considered to be the richest country in the world. It is believed that the country has untapped resourced of raw materials that are worth 24 trillion US Dollars. Democratic Republic of Congo has 30 percent of the total diamond reserve, a tenth of copper, 70 percent of world’s coltan and a third of world’s cobalt. Since the mid 1980’s despite having a wide variety of natural resources, the country’s economy kept declining. 70 Percent of its export revenue has been generated during 1970s and 1980s solely on the basis of the minerals. By the year 2000, 90 percent of the revenues earned by the country took place due to its mineral reserve. But the sad part is in spite of having such rich source of minerals and raw materials the nominal GDP of the country has remained one of the lowest which is also responsible for a below average standard of living.
