Croatia is a sovereign state which is officially known as Republic of Croatia and is situated at the crossroads of Central Europe, Mediterranean and Southeast Europe. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia which also forms one of the primary subdivisions of the country along with its 20 counties. The total land covered by Croatia is estimated approximately around 56,594 square kilometres and is known for its continental, diverse and mostly Mediterranean climates. The Adriatic Sea Coast of Croatia comprises of more than a thousand islands. The population of this country is reported to be around 4.28 million. Most of the people living in this country are Croats and the most common religion followed by the people happens to be Roman Catholicism. The Croats arrived in this country during early 7th century AD. After the First World War in 1918, the country was included in the unrecognized Croats and Serbs, State of Solvens which ultimately merged into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. During the Second World War, merely a puppet state existed but after that the country became a federal constituent of Second Yugoslavia and a founding member of a constitutionally socialist state. In the year 1991, the country declared independence and ultimately acquired their independent status on 8th of October. The Croatian war which ultimately led to its independence was fought over a period of four years. Croatia is a unitary state and a republic which is governed under a parliamentary system. According to The International Monetary Fund, Croatia was classified as an emerging and developing economy and the World Bank identified Croatia as a high income economy. Being an active participant in the UN peacekeeping forces, this country has contributed troops to the mission in Afghanistan which was led by NATO and obtained a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the years 2008-2009. Croatia is a member of the United Nations, NATO, the Council of Europe, World Trade Organization and European Union along with being a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean. As far as the economy of Croatia is concerned, the service sector plays the most essential and pivotal role. Agriculture as well as industrial sectors also equally contribute to the country’s economy along. During summers, Tourism plays a significant part in improving the economic condition of the country. Croatia is ranked 18th among the world’s most popular tourist destination. The country offers a universal health care system along with free primary and secondary education.
