Burundi is located in African Great Lakes region of East Africa and is a landlocked country. It is surrounded by three countries including Rwanda on its north, Democratic Republic of the Congo on its west and Tanzania to its south and east. Burundi is also considered a part of Central Africa sometimes. The capital of Burundi is Bujumbura. Even though Burundi is a landlocked country, much of its southwestern border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika. The country is believed to be situated on a rolling plateau in Central Africa. The country has two national parks that were established in the year 1982 to conserve and preserve wildlife. The lands of this country are mostly agricultural or pasture. Burundi had an indigenous kingdom for more than 200 years and the Twa, Tutsi and Hutu peoples have resided in this country for five hundred years, to say the least. Germany colonized the region in the early 20th century. After the defeat of Germany, it surrendered the territory to Belgium. When the Belgians started ruling, their interventions lead to social differences between the Hutu and the Tutsi which resulted in political followed by a civil war in middle of the twentieth century when Burundi fought for its independence. At present, the country is governed as a presidential representative democratic republic. Being one of the five poorest countries, Burundi has one of the lowest per capita GDPs compared to any country in the world. This country has suffered from numerous problems out of which corruption, warfare and poor access to education are considered to be most serious. The country is densely population which led to emigration of the young people as they wanted to go elsewhere for better opportunities. Burundi was considered the least globalized out of 140 surveyed countries by DHL Global Connectedness Index in the year 2012. As per Global Hunger Index of 2013, the country earned the distinction of being the hungriest country in the entire world in terms of percentage. The manufacturing sector of the country is underdeveloped and the country lacks resources. More than 90 percent of the population is employed by agriculture but agriculture accounts for just 30 percent of the exports. 90 percent of the foreign exchange earnings are derived from tea and coffee which are also the country’s primary and main exports. The landlocked feature of the country is also considered one of the major reasons behind the stagnancy of the economy that it faces.
