Burkina Faso is located in West Africa and is a country that is landlocked by Mali on its north, Benin on its southeast, Niger to its east, Togo and Ghana on the south and finally Ivory Coast to its southwest. The capital of Burkina Faso is Ouagadougou and as of 2014, the population of the country was estimated over 17.3 million. Burkina Faso was formerly known as the Republic of Upper Volta and in the year 1984, the country was renamed “Burkina Faso” by the president in power whose name was Thomas Sankara. People who reside in Burkina Faso are known as Burkinabe. The official language of the country is French.
Burkina Faso was ruled by a several ethnic groups including the Mossi Kingdoms after which the French and tiher colonial powers came into existence in late 19th century. The country gained independence from France in 1960 after undergoing many governmental changes. The country is currently a semi-presidential republic. As of March 2011 and according to Euromoney Country Risks Ranks, Burkina Faso was ranked in the entire world, 111th safest investment destination. The country has adopted CFA Franc as the currency and is also a part of West African Monetary and Economic Union.
As of the year 2012, the value of exports of Burkina Faso was recorded $754 million dollars which was 2.77 billion dollars in the year 2011. 80 percent of the working population is associated with agriculture or agrarian activities and agriculture constitutes about 32 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. International aid funds a large part of economic activity of this country. People who live in the south west and southern part of the country grow crops like cotton, rice, peanuts, maize, pearl millets and sorghum that are extras to be sold.
Mining in this country generates international aid and provides employment opportunities to its people. As of 2011, Burkina Faso became the fourth largest gold producer in Africa the production increase 32 percent at six gold mine sites. The international Art and Craft Fair, Ouagadougou which is known as SIAO in French is also held at Burkina Faso. Almost 2 million people have access to water since 2011 in the four principal urban centers of the country. The government of the country has made it possible by keeping the quality of the infrastructure high. The transport of the country is not up to the mark and under developed infrastructure is believed to be the main cause behind it.
