This south eastern European country shares its borders on the north with Romania, Macedonia and Siberia on the west, black sea on the east and Turkey and Greece on the south. Bulgaria is considered 16th largest country in Europe with a territory that covers 110,994 square kilometers. It comprises of 28 provinces and most of the population of this country is concentrated on the administrative centers of these provinces. The total population of Bulgaria is approximately 7.4 million. Sofia being the capital and the largest city of Bulgaria acts the cultural as well as commercial hub in the country.
During the Neolithic period, prehistoric cultures began to develop in Bulgarian lands. The Russo Turkish war which occurred from 1877-78 ultimately led in the formation of the Third Bulgarian State. In the year 1989, the communist party which was the ruling party at that time allowed multi-party elections which then further led to Bulgaria’s transition into a market based economy and its democracy. Power engineering, agriculture and heavy industry are some of the most essential aspects of the economy of this country and play an essential role in strengthening the economy. The country is a unitary parliamentary republic and has a high degree of economic, administrative as well as political centralization.
The emerging market economy of Bulgaria ensures upper middle income status for the people. Private sector of this country accounts for more than 80 percent to the total GDP. Bulgaria used to be an agricultural country in 1948 but it has transformed into an industrial economy with scientific as well as technological research. However the country did experience economic collapse in the year 1997 due to steep decline in both agricultural as well as industrial production. Even though the economic growth rapidly increased over the next few years and the country recovered from the loss, the average salary remained the lowest in EU. More than a fifth of the labour force of this country received a mere €1/hour.
PPS GDP per capita of Bulgaria rose up to 47 percent in the year 2013 of the EUaverage but the cost of living was reported 48 percent of the average. The currency of Bulgaria is known as Lev and the country has discarded its plans to adopt Euro. The labour force of this country is estimated approximately 2.45 million out of which 7.1 percent of the population are involved in agrarian activities, 57.7 percent are involved exclusively in service sectors and the remaining 35.2 percent are involved with production of chemical and extraction of metals or minerals along with various other industrial works.
