Bosnia and Herzegovina is often known in short and informally as Bosnia which is located on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe. Sarajevo is not only the capital of Bosnia but is also the largest city. Bordered by Serbia to the east, Croatia to the north and Montenegro to the south west, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a landlocked country except for the 12 miles of coastline surrounding the city of Neum. The central as well as the eastern interior of the country is mountainous and the northeast comprises of flatland but the northwest is moderately hilly. The southern tip has Mediterranean climate but continental climate can be experienced in the rest of the country.
Initially Bosnia was a part of Kingdom of Yugoslavia but after World War II Bosnia was granted full republic status and Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was formed. Ultimately in the year 1992, the country proclaimed its independence soon after the dissolution of Yugoslavia which led to Bosnia war that lasted for three years. There are more than many specialties of this southeastern European country and their winter sports, cuisine, architecture, festivals, music are known to be the most prominent and largest of their kind. The country has inherited its cultural heritage and natural beauty from six historical civilizations. Herzegovina has no defined borders of its own as such and the country was known as Bosnia only until the Austro-Hungarian occupation.
The economy of this country is very much dependent on the dilemma of introducing transitional market informs to the country’s formerly mixed economy along with the problem of re building a country that was torn apart by the war. Metal industries were always promoted which resulted in their growth over time which ultimately benefitted the country’s economy. In the 1970’s and 80’s the country’s economy relied strongly on the industrial exports. Agriculture also plays an essential role in the growth of the country’s economy and most of the agrarian activities are done on the farms that are private owned.
After the Bosnian war things became worse and the GDP fell by 60 percent but the GDP was reported to increase by 10 percent from the year 2003 to 2004. Between the years 1995 to 2020, Bosnia and Herzegovina will have the third highest tourism growth rate. The capital of this country is a famous tourist destination mainly due to its cultural, religious and historical aspects. Not only that, this country has also become a famous ecotourism and skiing destination.
