Benin was formerly known as Dahomey and this West African country shares it borders with Togo on the west, Nigeria on the east and Niger on the north along with Burkina Faso. The seat of the government in this country is not located in Porto-Novo which happens to be the capital of Benin but in Cotonou which is known to be the economic capital of the country and the largest city. A population estimated approximately around 9.98 million and the overall area comprises of 115,000 square kilometers. The language that is mostly commonly spoken is French. The total area covered by Benin is estimated approximately around 115,000 square kilometers. Being a sub Saharian and tropical country, it depends on agriculture entirely. The income of the country and the substantial employment arise from substantial farming. Roman Catholicism is the largest religious group of the country. The main political entities from 17th century to 19th century, Kingdom of Dahomey influenced the country, its people and its culture in lot many ways. Slavery was very predominant in this region during the 17th century. These slaves were shipped to New York during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Once the slavery was abolished from the nation, the French renamed the country as French Dahomey after taking control. Dahomey was declared independent from France in the year 1960 and the republic of Benin was finally created in the year 1991. The economy of the nation is completely dependent on agricultural products such as regional trade or cotton production. 80 percent of the official export receipts and 40 percent of GDP is covered solely by cotton. The economy is believed to have strengthened over time with an increase of GDP growth rate up to 5.7 percent in the year 2009. Agricultural sector and the country’s main export being cotton contribute to a great extent in improving the overall economy of the country. Moreover, the geographical location is also an additional factor as it enables trade, transportation and tourism. The nation has planned on attracting more foreign investments which is believed to help the country’s economy grow and prosper further. The country also plans on focusing on tourism as well as agricultural products and food processing systems. New information and communication technology will also be encouraged. The Millennium Challenge Account Grant was signed in February and in the year of 2006 under which 307 USD were assigned for reforming land tenure system, the financial sector along with commercial justice system.
