The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic gained its independence in the year 1918 and is known as the Republic of Azerbaijan. Situated in the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe and bounded by the Caspian Sea in the East, Georgia in the north-west and Armenia to the west and Iran to the South. It has a dominant-party presidential republic and the President of the country is Ilham Aliyev. It is the member of ten states of the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the NATO Partnership for Peace Programme. Azerbaijan is one of the sixth independent Turkey- speaking states. The country is divided into 9 major regions, which are further subdivided into 59 districts and 11 cities. The capital of the country is Baku, which is also the largest city of Azerbaijan. There are approximately 9, 494, 600 people living in the country. The major economical growth of the country depends on the abundance of the natural gas and the vast oil reserve. The country is also a huge source of various other minerals and metals like gold, silver, iron, copper, titanium, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum and manganese. Azerbaijan is considered one of the most important geographical spot for oil exploration and development. The country has the largest agricultural basin in the region as well. Around 54.9% of the country is agricultural land. Therefore, the country also earns modest revenue from the agricultural products like the green vegetables, viticulture, wine making, medicinal plants and cotton growing. The live stock and the farm products are also the important farm products. The Caspian fishing industry contributes in the growth of economy as well. The GDP (PPP) of the country is approximately 116.639 billion USD with a per capita income of $12,331 and the GDP (nominal) is around 87.763 billion USD with the per capita income of $9,278. Tourism also contributes a large amount in the growth chart of the economy of the country. In the recent times, Azerbaijan is a popular tourist destination for religious and the health care tourism along with popular health care facilities like the spa. Skiing is also a popular part of the tourism industry in the country. Tourism has been on the rise as there is a modern and efficient network of transportation in the country, as well. The country also boasts of a high rate of literacy and comparatively a low rate of unemployment. In the future the country aspires to retain the economical growth and emerge as on of the developing countries amongst the Arab countries.
