Angola is the seventh largest country lying in the southern part of Africa. The capital of Angola is Luanda, which is the largest city. The country is home to 24, 383, 301 people. The history of Angola dates back to the Paleolithic age but it has its roots in Portuguese colonization which was widespread in the 16th century. Today Angola is a member state of the African union, Latin Union, United Nations, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries and the OPEC along with the Southern African Development Community. The country is divided into 18 provinces. The government is the unitary presidential republic and the President of Angola is Jose Eduardo dos Santos. Despite a vast deposit of mineral and petroleum reserves, the average standard of the people of Angola is economically low. The life expectancy and the infant mortality rate is the highest in the world in this country. The recent GDP (PPP) of Angola is estimated around 139.059 billion USD with a per capita income of $ 6,484. The GDP (nominal) is around 129.785 billion USD with a per capita income of $ 6,052. The National Bank of Angola maintains the financial system of Angola. The country has a huge reserve of diamond mines, gold and copper. It has a rich wildlife reserve as well. Angola is rich in oil reserve in the recent times the overall economic growth of Africa has developed to a considerable rate and it is emerging as one of the fastest growing nation. But in Angola, the inequality and racism, lack of education and prevailing and the acute state of poverty creates the main hindrance towards the economical growth of this country. Before the independence in the year 1975, Angola provided the major supply of bananas, coffee and sisal to all the other African countries. But the prolonged civil war destroyed the agricultural land to a large extent and turning them into land mines. Now most of the people depend upon expensive food products which are mainly imported from South Africa and Portugal. Therefore, despite abundant natural resources, Angola ranks in the lowest category of per capita output. But the country is striving hard and trying to emerge as an economically growing nation. Its main strength lies in the oil sector which accounts for over 50% of the total GDP of the nation. The country is making efforts in growing economically strong in other sectors like fisheries, fruits, forest products, coffee and gold.
